You are brushing. You are cleaning. You are flossing. You are avoiding stain-causing foods and drinks. But still, you get stains on your teeth. You just cannot seem to get rid of them no matter how hard you try. Do not give up! Your Leawood, KS, dentist is here to help. With a professional teeth-whitening treatment, we can set you on the path for brighter teeth. Now, that is something to smile about.
How Does The Treatment Work?
This cosmetic treatment is easy, and it can be done at our office. Or if you have the time, we can set you up with an at-home treatment that you can do on your own. If you choose to have the treatment done at our office, we will apply the bleach to your teeth and stimulate it with a special light that quickly removes stains from them. The home version consists of whitening trays that are custom-designed that contain bleach. The complete process will take approximately 10 days. Your time commitment for wearing the trays is one to two hours each day.
What Causes Stains?
There are various factors that may cause your teeth to get stains. The biggest one is your diet. If you routinely eat food or drinks that are known to cause stains (e.g. red wine, coffee, tea), then the chances of getting stains are increased. There is also your age to consider. As you grow older, the enamel on your teeth becomes thinner, exposing more of the dentin underneath, which has a yellow color.
Is The Treatment Safe?
Teeth whitening is a safe treatment. The bleach used is either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide. They are used because they are good at breaking up stains into small parts. This causes the color concentration to reduce, which makes your teeth brighter. However, this treatment will not work for everyone. Those who have hurt a tooth during an accident and it has changed color will not benefit from the treatment. Also, if you take medications that change the color of your teeth, or if you have veneers, crowns, or fillings, whitening will not be effective in those areas.
