We want to ensure all of our patients, even those with dental anxiety, enjoy a comfortable and positive treatment experience. To help ensure this, we can offer a dental sedation selection. In today’s blog, Dreem Dentistry in Leawood, KS, talks about how we keep smiles comfortable with dental sedation.

When You Need a Calming Agent

When do we recommend dental sedation for a patient? This could be necessary if someone has a very high level of anxiety about seeing the dentist, which could impact how they undergo treatment or even lead them to avoid seeing us altogether! We also offer calming medication for people with special needs that could complicate the ability to receive even minor treatment. If you are undergoing more extensive treatments, such as dental implant placement or even tooth extraction, then we could offer this to ensure the process is a cozy and positive experience for you throughout.

Keeping You Cozy

Our team wants to make sure your visit is comfortable, but how do we choose the right sedation option for you? Our team will take a number of different factors into account. For example, we will look at your age, weight, and medical history, including any medications you are currently taking. We also factor in your anxiety levels and the presence of special needs that could complicate your ability to undergo care, as well as the type of procedure we will be conducting. With this information, we can then select the best option for keeping you comfortable with little memory of the procedure at all!

Nitrous Oxide

With nitrous oxide, we will administer this in a gas form. In fact, this option is often referred to as laughing gas. A mild option, this is safe for patients of all ages, including children. A mask is placed over the nose and the patient breathes in a gas that allows them to enter a deep state of calm and euphoria. You stay conscious and able to respond to the dentist, and we can adjust the levels of sedation needed throughout the procedure. You will have little to no memory of the process, and the effects end once the procedure does, so you can often return to work or school, and even drive yourself home!

Oral Sedation

Oral conscious sedation provides a deeper form of calming, and is administered before the procedure in the form of a pill or liquid. We will recommend you avoid food and drink for a few hours before the procedure; we will likely schedule it for the morning. You take the medication and enter a deep state of calm, with little to no memory of the process at all, but you still remain conscious. We may combine this with nitrous oxide as well. The medication takes time to wear off, so you may be groggy when the procedure ends and will need someone on hand to bring you home afterward.

IV

The deepest form of calming we have is IV sedation, which is administered to you intravenously. This puts you in a very deep and sleep-like state, with little to no memory of the process at all. We will monitor you the entire time, and the effects again will take time to wear off fully, so you will need to have someone available to take you home afterward. We will also provide aftercare instructions and prescriptions to aid in the healing process, as you likely are undergoing a more extensive option if you are receiving IV calming.
