Do you have dental anxiety? If so, this could be a potential stumbling block in your path to a healthier smile. But we can help! With dental sedation, we can help patients of all ages enjoy a comfortable treatment experience. In today’s blog, Dreem Dentistry in Leawood, KS, talks about easing anxiety with our sedation options.

The Need for a Calming Solution

When do you or a family member benefit from a form of sedation? We may prescribe this for people with high levels of dental anxiety, or for those with special needs, both of which could prevent people from seeking the care they need to enjoy optimal oral health. This also helps ensure comfort during more extensive and involved procedures, such as dental implant placement or wisdom tooth extraction. If you need dental care and have a fear of the dentist, we understand and won’t minimize your fears. But we will find a way for you to obtain the care you need with comfort!

The option we select for you will be based on factors like age, weight, medical history, current medications, and your overall anxiety level.

Nitrous Oxide

The mildest (and common) form of dental sedation we provide is known as nitrous oxide, or laughing gas. We will administer this through a mask over the nose. You breathe in a gas and enter a deep state of calm, often with no memory of the process. Patients stay conscious and able to respond to the dentist as needed, and the levels of sedation can be adjusted during your procedure. When the procedure ends, the effects do too, so you can drive yourself home or even return to work or school!

Oral Conscious

If you require a deeper level of calm, then we could help with oral conscious sedation. This option is administered through a pill or liquid taken before the procedure begins. You will likely need to avoid food and drink in the hours before the procedure begins. You enter a deeper state of calm, staying conscious but having no memory of the process at all. The effects tend to last longer, so you will need someone available to bring you home afterward, and you won’t be returning to work or school that day.

IV

The deepest form we offer is intravenous, and is given directly to your blood stream so you enter a deep and sleep-like state, with no memory of the process at all. Again, the effects will take time to wear off completely so someone needs to be around to bring you home. Our team will monitor you thoroughly during the procedure.
