Our team provides care for the whole family, including kids! In fact, with children’s dentistry we can help kids of all ages enjoy good oral health and avoid issues like tooth decay. In today’s blog, your Leawood, KS, dentist talks about helping little smiles with children’s dentistry.
Kids Need a Checkup and Cleaning
We want to see your children every six months once they reach the age of two. With a routine visit, we can keep a close eye on their smiles as they grow and change, so we can identify possible risks like tooth decay, misalignment, or even gingivitis. Our team can then take action to treat discomfort and prevent complications like premature tooth loss or misalignment. We also discuss proper homecare habits and help them better understand their own oral health. These visits have been shown to help prevent dental anxiety in children too!
In the same appointment as the exam, we will also clean their teeth. A dental cleaning allows us to completely remove all plaque and tartar from the teeth, a process that fights bad breath and teeth stains, and also prevents tooth decay. The process only takes a few minutes, and we then polish the teeth to limit the ability for buildup to form, and to keep teeth bright.
Fluoride Treatments
Our team also provides preventive treatments to help lower the risk of tooth decay. As part of the checkup and cleaning visit we discussed above, we will apply fluoride to the teeth to help strengthen the outer enamel and fight the onset of cavity. The process takes a few seconds and kids just need to avoid food and drink for about a half hour as the fluoride varnish properly cures. We also recommend a fluoride toothpaste to keep the outer enamel strong.
Dental Sealants
We know that kids often have a little trouble reaching the molars when they brush and floss. This means food and drink particles can remain trapped between these rear teeth, increasing the risk of tooth decay. But with dental sealants, we will apply a thin layer of acrylic to the rear teeth. This takes seconds, and the sealant can stay in place for years to come, sometimes as long as a decade!
Fillings
If we do discover a cavity, we can offer relief with a lifelike and metal-free filling, protecting little smiles. If you have any questions about our approach to children’s dentistry, or if you want to schedule a visit for your kid, then contact our team today to learn more.
