Don’t let losing your natural teeth cause your smile to change in negative ways. Instead, talk to our team about securing a prosthetic to fill the gap in your smile and protect function and beauty. In today’s blog, your Leawood, KS, dentist talks about providing a full smile again with our custom dental bridges.
The Impact of Losing a Tooth
When you lose even a single tooth, this could cause serious trouble for your smile. For example, the open gap could create misalignment, changing your smile in negative ways and increasing the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Missing teeth could upset bite balance, so you become more vulnerable to issues like TMJ disorder and bruxism (teeth grinding). Missing teeth could also impact how you eat, limit clear speech, and make you feel self-conscious too! But with a dental bridge, we have a way to fill a gap caused by a missing tooth or as many as three in a row.
Creating a Dental Bridge
We start the process by numbing the teeth on each side of the gap, known as abutment teeth. We then remove structure from these and take images and measurements of the prepared teeth and the gap with intraoral cameras. Using these images and measurements, we can design and craft a custom-made dental bridge. The prosthetic contains your new tooth or teeth, with corns attached to each end, made from ceramic, this will be able to handle daily bite forces, and we can color-matched it to blend with your smile too!
Traditional and Implant-Supported Options
With a traditional bridge, we will connect the crown portions to the abutment teeth to secure your new teeth firmly in place for 10 to 15 years on average. They will need to be replaced as the jaw ridge changes shape. But with dental implants, we could insert one to two dental implants into the jaw, and connect the crowns to them, no need to remove structure from healthy teeth. The posts act as new roots and keep the jaw intact, your new prosthetic could stay in place for much longer, decades even.
