When Our Patients Need Dental Sedation

When do you need to undergo treatment with a calming solution? We may recommend sedation if a patient has dental anxiety, as this can ensure they remain calm and comfortable, and enjoy a positive experience at the office. We also recommend this for people with special needs for the same reason. If you are undergoing more extensive treatments, including dental implant placement or wisdom tooth extraction, this can help ensure the process is comfortable throughout the entire procedure.

The Steps for Choosing the Right Option

How do we choose the right sedation option for you? Our team will take several factors into account. We will look at any medications you are taking to ensure there is no conflict and complication there, and we will also assess your overall anxiety levels. We look at your medical history, age, and weight as well. Every patient is different, and we will also have trained anesthesiologists on hand to monitor you throughout the procedure!

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is a common form of sedation that is mild and safe for kids and adults alike. We will administer those to you through a mask worn over your nose. You breathe in a special gas mixture and enter a deep state of calm. You stay conscious, but have little to no memory of the process at all, and feel very euphoric and calm. The effects can be adjusted during treatment, and the effects also end when the procedure does, so you can drive yourself home or even return to work or school if you desire.

Oral Conscious

We also have a deeper calming selection with oral conscious sedation. We will recommend fasting every six to eight hours before the procedure, we will likely schedule your treatment in the morning. When you arrive, we will administer our calming option with a pill or liquid form, which you take before the procedure begins. You then enter a deep state of calm, remaining conscious and able to respond to the dentist as needed, but also having no memory of the process at all.

The effects take time to wear off, so you will need to have some available to bring you home as you may be groggy for a bit. This can help patients with more severe anxiety or those undergoing extensive treatments that involve oral surgery.

IV Sedation

The deepest form of calming available is administered intravenously. Again, you need to avoid food and drink before the procedure begins. We will administer this and allow you to enter a deep and sleep-like state, with no memory of the procedure at all. Again, the effects will take time to wear off, so you may be a bit groggy and you will definitely need someone on hand to take you home afterward. A trained anesthesiologist will be on hand the whole time to monitor your heart rate.

With all of these options, following your treatment will give you any instructions for aftercare, especially if you have undergone oral surgery, including dental implant placement or tooth extraction. We also provide prescriptions for necessary medications to aid in the healing process, and we will schedule follow-up appointments. We will send instructions and prescriptions with the people who take you home. If you have any questions about how we ensure a calm and positive experience with sedation, or if you would like to schedule a visit to our office, talk to our team. Patient comfort is important to our team, and we strive to offer this for each and every patient we see!
