leawood sedation

Do you have anxiety about seeing the dentist? Do you have issues that could complicate your ability to undergo treatment? If so, then we can help! In today’s blog, your Leawood, KS, dentist talks about ensuring a comfortable and positive visit to our office with our dental sedation options.

The Reasons We May Prescribe Dental Sedation

When do we provide dental calming treatments for our patients? We could recommend this for patients who have high anxiety levels or special needs, as that could complicate their ability to undergo treatment. We also offer this to ensure your comfort during more extensive treatments, such as tooth extraction or dental implant placement. Our team will take a number of factors into account when recommending the right calming solution for you!

Choosing Which is Right for You

How do we select which of our three options is right for you? Our team will look at your age, weight, medical history, and take into account any medications you are currently taking. We also assess your anxiety levels and any special needs that could complicate your ability to receive care. With these factors on hand, we can choose which is right for you.

Three Different Options

Our team offers patients three different selections. The most common is a mild form known as nitrous oxide. Administered through a mask over the nose, you breathe in a gas and enter a deep state of calm and relaxation. The effects end when the procedure does, so you can even drive yourself home or even return to work or school. We can adjust levels during treatment too.

If you need a deeper calm, we could offer oral conscious sedation, taken in the form of a pill or liquid prior to the procedure. You reach a deep state of calm, with little to no memory of the process at all. You may feel a bit groggy afterward and need someone to bring you home.

The deepest form is IV sedation, which is handled intravenously and offers a sleep-like state, essential for the more extensive oral surgeries or if you have serious anxiety about the process. You will be minted carefully by a trained anesthesiologist, and the effects take time to wear off once again, you need someone available to take you home afterward.
