We understand that many people don’t particularly enjoy visiting the dentist. While it is essential for your overall health, not to mention your oral health, it’s not always an abundantly fun experience. However, our practice always prioritizes our patients’ comfort to give them the best experience. One of the ways we accomplish this is by providing sedation for a variety of our procedures. In today’s blog, your Leawood, KS dentist discusses the sedation options we offer and the situations in which each one is appropriate.
Nitrous Oxide Is Mildest Option
Nitrous oxide — also known as laughing gas — is our most mild sedative. While it is not as strong as other options, it is incredibly versatile. You inhale it through a small mask that comfortably fits on your nose. The gas is mixed with oxygen, so the dosage can be customized to your exact needs. Nitrous Oxide can help mitigate discomfort and anxiety, but it also keeps you lucid, so you can easily speak with our team or answer any questions we ask you. Unlike other sedation options, Nitrous Oxide wears off very quickly after you stop breathing it in, so you will be completely back to normal minutes after your procedure is completed.
Oral Sedation Is Stronger
Oral sedation is stronger than laughing gas and it does a great job of keeping you relaxed and comfortable during your procedure. We typically recommend this option for more extensive procedures or for those with severe anxiety about visiting the dentist. Oral sedation typically consists of a pill or liquid you take before your appointment. We try to time it so that by the time you arrive, its effects are beginning. With this in mind, you will likely take it at home before coming in and will need someone to drive you to and from your appointment. It is also important for you to inform us of any health issues or medications you are taking, as this is a prescription drug, and we need to avoid any potential interactions.
IV Sedation
For the most extensive procedures, we provide IV sedation, which goes directly into your bloodstream. While this is the strongest option we offer, and you will be extremely relaxed, you will remain conscious during your visit and able to communicate with our team. Like oral sedation, you will need to have someone drive you to and from the appointment, as you will be out of it once your procedure is over.
