Invisalign® involves using clear aligners to treat dental misalignment, providing a cosmetic approach to straightening your teeth. We can offer this for our teen and adult patients, and help patients enjoy their best possible smile! In today’s blog, your Leawood, KS, dentist talks about Invisalign® aligners.
The Causes of Dental Misalignment (and the Risks)
Why do we develop crooked, crowded, and overlapping teeth? For some, this is due to issues in childhood, such as thumb sucking or even issues with the growth of the jaw or eruption of the teeth. Losing primary teeth early could alter how permanent ones erupt and cause misalignment as well. For teens and adults, losing teeth also causes misalignment to occur because there is a gap in the smile that allows nearby teeth to drift. The arrival of the wisdom teeth could be a factor too.
When misalignment occurs, this makes thoroughly brushing and flossing a difficult process, which increases the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. The strain on your jaw joints could boost the risk of TMJ disorder and bruxism (teeth grinding) too. You could also feel embarrassed about your appearance, which could impact your social life. This causes negative impacts on your overall quality of life. But we can help with our cosmetic orthodontic option!
Creating Your Cosmetic Orthodontics
Invisalign® doesn’t use metal brackets or wires to correct your uneven smile. Instead, our team will take detailed images and impressions of your bite and use these in a lab setting to design and craft a series of aligners. Each one is custom-made for you, so it will fit comfortably and provide treatment with precision and accuracy. They are also clean in appearance, so your orthodontics are almost invisible when worn! This makes Invisalign® a popular choice for our teen and adult patients. Once your aligners are ready, you can start the treatment process.
The Invisalign® Treatment Process
When your aligners arrive, you will start wearing the first set for 20 to 22 hours a day, depending on our recommendation, for about two weeks. At this point, you then begin wearing the next set in the series for the same amount of time and continue this process as your smile is gradually and carefully corrected. For many, optimal results only take a year to achieve! Being removable also means you can take out your aligners before meals, brushing and flossing, or special occasions.
