Now that the weather is warming up and spring is approaching, kids and adults alike will be participating in sports, and this could increase the risk of a dental emergency. When you chip or break a tooth, or knock one out, you need to see us right away! In today’s blog, your Leawood, KS, dentist can offer emergency dentistry.
Emergency Dental Situations
What is a dental emergency, and when should you see our team for care? If you have any injury tot eh teeth or gums that needs immediate attention, but is not life-threatening, then this is a dental emergency. This could include sudden and severe toothaches, objects caught between teeth that floss cannot remove, or chipped and cracked teeth. When a tooth is knocked loose or out completely, you need to see us. The same goes for loose or missing crowns or fillings, or damaged dental prosthetics or orthodontics.
Easing Your Discomfort
When your dental emergency happens, you need to let us know. If this happens outside of normal business hours, please call us right away. Our team will then reach out to you with an appointment time, so we can see you quickly and offer care to repair your tooth. But in the meantime, you can take actions to help alleviate some of your discomfort.
You should rinse with warm water and use a bit of cloth or gauze to stem any bleeding. To avoid facial swelling, apply a cold compress or ice pack to the side of your face. You can also take an over-the-counter pain reliever. If a tooth is damaged and you can recover any pieces, bring them with you. If a tooth is knocked out, pick it up by the crown only, never touch the root, and place it in a sealed container of milk or salt water, and ring it with you.
Repairing Your Teeth
When you see us, we will carefully examine your smile with advanced digital imaging, including digital x-rays, so we can plan treatment in detail. For some, we may be able to offer repair in one visit with dental bonding. For more severe injuries, we could place a custom dental crown. We also have options to replace missing teeth, and we can replace compromised prosthetics or restorations as needed too.
If you have any questions about our approach to repairing dental injuries, or if you need emergency dental care, then contact our team right away! We look forward to helping you smile with confidence.
