We know that kids need to see the dentist for checkups and cleanings, just as results do! With routine care and a preventive approach to their oral health, kids can enjoy a lowered risk of issues like tooth decay. In today’s blog, your Leawood, KS, dentist talks about our approach to children’s dentistry.
When Dental Appointments are Necessary
When should you bring your child into the dentist for an appointment? We recommend the first visit at around age one, once the first baby tooth has erupted. Starting at age two, kids should see our team every six months. However, please don’t hesitate to bring them in for an appointment in between these visits should possible concerns arise. If they have a toothache, or have injured a tooth, let us know right away so we can make an appointment and provide treatment.
Checkups and Cleanings
The checkup and cleaning every six months help protect little smiles. We have a chance to examine their smiles with advanced digital imaging, so we can make a diagnosis with precision and accuracy, identifying areas of concern in the early stages. We then create a personalized treatment plan! These visits also allow us to instill good oral health habits, and help kids avoid dental anxiety, as they become used to seeing our team. The cleaning portion is also important as this can remove all plaque and tartar for the teeth, which helps reduce the risk of bad breath, teeth stains, cavities, and even gingivitis. The process only takes a few minutes! In between these visits, your kids can help control plaque and tartar buildup by brushing their teeth twice a day for two minutes and flossing every evening.
Fluoride and Dental Sealants
We also have unique treatments that can help lower the risk of tooth decay. During your child’s exam portions, our team will administer fluoride to the teeth in a varnish form. This coats the teeth and strengthens them, including the weakened portions of enamel, to make cavities less likely. Application takes seconds and kids just have to avoid food and drink for about 30 minutes while the material cures.
We also have dental sealants. Since children have trouble reaching the rear teeth when they brush and floss, this can allow cavities to form on or between the molars. But we can apply a special acrylic coating known as a dental sealant, which prevents food and drink particles from being stuck on or between the teeth. Applying them takes seconds and they can often stay in place for up to ten years!
