leawood sedation

We offer care for patients and their families, from minor treatments to addressing complex oral health issues. Our team wants to help keep patients comfortable, even if they have dental anxiety and special needs. In today’s blog, your Leawood, KS, dentist talks about our approach to sedation dentistry.

When Do You Need a Calming Option?

If you have dental anxiety, we will never try to minimize your fears or downplay them, instead we want to make sure you can receive the care necessary to enjoy better oral health. We also offer calming medications to help those with special needs too, and to ensure the comfort of those undergoing more complex treatments, such as dental implant placement. Our team will take a number of different factors into account when we prescribe a sedation option, such as age, weight, and your medical history. We also take into account any medications you’re taking, as well as your anxiety levels. A trained anesthesiologist will also be on hand to monitor you throughout the process!

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is a very common option, and one that is safe for kids and adults alike. Our team will administer those through a mask over your nose. You inhale a gas and enter a calm state, with little to no memory of the procedure. But you will be conscious the whole time and able to respond to the dentist as needed. The effects wear off once the procedure ends, so you can return to work or school on your own.

Oral Conscious Sedation

If you require a deeper form of relaxation, we could administer this through a pill or liquid prior to the procedure. We may ask you to fast before the procedure, and arrive in loose and comfortable clothing. The effects will help you stay calm and have little memory of the procedure, despite being conscious. The effects take time to wear off completely, so be sure to have a find or family available to take you home afterward.

IV

This is the deepest form available, and helps you enter a sleep-like state with no memory of the procedure afterward. We administer this intravenously, and again recommend you wear loose and comfortable clothing and to also avoid food and drink in the eight hours before the procedure. The effects will take time to wear off, so again make sure you have someone on hand to bring you home.
