When you feel anxious about visiting the dentist, this can make it difficult to undergo even minor treatments. But we don’t want your dental phobias to stand between you and the smile you deserve. In today’s blog, your Leawood, KS, dentist talks about our dental sedation options. We offer three different selections, which can help you enter a calm and relaxed state during your treatment, so you enjoy your experience and obtain results that make you feel proud! Everyone deserves good oral health and beautiful smiles, and for those with anxiety or special needs, sedation can make this a possibility.
When We Prescribe a Calming Solution
Our team could prescribe dental sedation for patients with anxiety or special needs that would make undergoing treatment a difficult process. We also provide this for those undergoing more extensive treatments that would be uncomfortable otherwise. Our team wants to ensure your experience in our office is a positive one, and we can do so with the use of a calming treatment like dental sedation. We could recommend this for treatment like tooth extraction, dental implant placement, or grafting or sinus lift procedures, treatments that require more than a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort.
The Factors We Look At
Our team will take a number of different factors into account when we prescribe one. For example, we will look at your age, weight, medical history, and your anxiety levels. We also look at any medications you’re taking and your dental history too. We want an option that keeps you comfortable and relaxed, so you have a comfortable office experience. Every smile is unique, and we take a personalized approach to care for each of our patients. We’re ready to see you and help you make major changes to your smile in 2024.
Our Dental Sedation Options
The most common option we prescribe is nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas. This option is administered through a mask over your nose. You breathe in a gas and enter a calm and euphoric state, with little to no memory of the procedure afterward. But you’re still conscious and able to respond to the dentist as needed. The effects wear off immediately when the procedure ends, so you can return to work or school. You may even be able to drive yourself home too!
For more advanced treatments, we could offer a deeper state of calm with oral conscious sedation. You still remain conscious and will have little to no memory of the procedure. This is taken in a pill or liquid form prior to the treatment. You should wear loose and comfortable clothing, and the effects are much deeper. We also suggest fasting before the procedure too. You will be a bit groggy when the procedure ends, so have a friend or family member available to bring you home afterward.
The deepest form of calming is IV sedation, which is administered to the patient intravenously. Be sure you wear loose and comfortable clothing, and avoid foods and drinks for the eight hours before the procedure. You will immediately enter a very deep state of calm, and a trained anesthesiologist will be on hand to monitor you throughout the treatment. When the treatment ends, you will be groggy and will need to arrange for a ride home.
If you have more advanced concerns with your smile, such as wisdom teeth, missing teeth, or issues with weakened jawbones, we could help with oral surgery and the use of sedation can help you stay comfortable and calm throughout the process, so you have a positive experience in our office and won’t dread your next visit.
