Do you have concerns about seeing the dentist, possibly even a serious anxiety? If so, then you should talk to our team. With dental sedation, we can choose from three different options to help you stay calm and comfortable, even during oral surgery. In today’s blog, your team at Dreem Dentistry talks about the comfort sedation provides our Leawood, KS, patients. For kids and adults alike, we can help ensure a better treatment experience and results that make you feel proud to smile and laugh!
When Do You Need Dental Sedation?
We typically recommend dental sedation when a patient is undergoing a more extensive treatment, such as tooth extraction or dental implant placement. But this is also helpful for people who have a real fear of the dentist, as this can help them overcome anxiety and remain calm and collected throughout the process, enjoying a positive treatment experience. Likewise, for people with special needs this also helps them remain calm and comfortable. Everyone should enjoy a positive time in the office, so they look forward to their next visit and maintain good oral health. With a calming treatment prior to your procedure, we can help make this a reality for you.
How Do We Choose Which One is Right for You?
We actually offer three different forms of sedation, so which one will be right for you? We will select one based on a multitude of different factors. For example, we will look at your age, overall weight, your medical history, anxiety levels, and take into account any medications you are currently taking. We also discuss special needs as well. With this moderation, we can select which calming medication is right for you, and start you on the path to a healthier smile. This can aid in minor procedures or even oral surgeries as needed!
Nitrous Oxide
The most common form of calming is a mild option known as nitrous oxide. This is administered to kids and adults alike, and is given in a gas form. A mask is placed over your nose, and you breathe in the gas to reach a state of calm and euphoria. You are able to respond to the dentist as needed, but will have no memory of the process at all. The effects can be adjusted mid-treatment if needed, and the effects also wear off once the procedure is done. You could even drive yourself home or return to work or school if you want!
Oral Conscious Sedation
If you require a more serious form of calming, we could offer oral conscious, which is given prior to the procedure in a pill or liquid form. We will likely schedule your appointment in the morning, as you need to avoid food and drink for a few hours prior to the treatment. You enter a much deeper state of calm, with little to no memory of the process. But you are still conscious and able to respond to the dentist as needed. The effects will take some time to wear off, so be sure you have someone available to take you home afterward.
IV Sedation
Our team also offers a form of calming that puts you into a sleep-like state, often reserved for those with severe anxiety or those undergoing more extensive forms of oral surgery. Again, you will need to fast prior to the procedure. This is administered intravenously, and you will have no memory of the process. Again, you will likely be groggy afterward, so be sure to have someone ready to drive you home.
We always provide detailed aftercare instructions if needed, and prescriptions for any necessary medications, again if needed.
