leawood checkup and cleaning

Now that we are officially in a new year, now is a great time to schedule a visit for the first checkup and cleaning of 2025. We would love to help you maintain good oral health and catch any possible issues in their earliest stages. In today’s blog, your Leawood, KS, dentist talks about how a simple checkup and cleaning can protect your smile.

Dental Exams

When you arrive for your first dental exam of 2025, we will examine your smile with advanced digital imaging. Using digital x-rays and intraoral cameras, we can look at the teeth, gums, roots, and oral structures for signs of trouble, and assess the current state of your smile. With an accurate diagnosis, we can find out if you need treatment and plan care in detail. We will look for signs of tooth decay, dental infection, gingivitis, and periodontal disease, as well as TMJ disorder and bruxism (teeth grinding). For adults, we also screen for oral cancer, and for kids we make sure teeth are erupting and falling out on schedule.

Cleaning Your Teeth

In the same visit, we will also conduct a detailed dental cleaning. Our team will employ an ultrasonic scaling device and a manual tool to gently and thoroughly remove all buildup from the teeth. Removing plaque and tartar helps lower the risk of tooth decay and gum disease, and also fights bad breath and teeth stains.

Improving How You Care for Smiles at Home

Our team wants to see you every six months for a checkup and cleaning, this goes for every member of your family, from the youngest to the oldest. But in between these visits, you can take steps to help minimize the risk of poor oral health and to control the buildup of plaque and tartar until we can remove it. You should brush your teeth for two minutes when you wake up and then do so again before going to bed each evening. Be sure you use a fluoride toothpaste to strengthen the enamel in the process! We also urge you to floss every evening before going to bed too, so you can remove stray food particles that a toothbrush alone cannot reach. Cutting back on the sugar and starch in your diet is helpful too!
