The loss of a tooth, or a few in a row, could leave behind gaps that alter the appearance, health, and function of your smile. But we can provide dental prosthetics to fill these gaps and restore your smile. In today’s blog, your Leawood, KS, dentist talks about how we create and place our custom and lifelike dental bridges.
When to Seek Treatment
You should let us know the moment you lose a tooth. Even the loss of one tooth could increase the risk of misalignment, tooth decay, gum disease, and even jaw joint strain that causes TMJ disorder and bruxism (teeth grinding). Without treatment, this could lead to worsening oral health and an increased risk of tooth loss. But with a dental bridged our team can create a custom prosthetic that looks beautiful and addresses between one and up to three or four missing teeth in a row. Don’t live with embarrassing gaps in your smile, talk to our gleam about a lifelike solution that can last for years to come!
Creating a Custom Bridge
To begin, we will need to numb the teeth on each side of the gap, so we can gently and comfortably remove structure from them. These are the abutment teeth, and they are key for securing your new prosthetic in place. Our team will take detailed images and impressions of them from multiple angles, combining these to create a 3D model of your smile. With this mold we can design and craft your custom bridge in one visit. We will use ceramic to craft your prosthetic because this material can handle daily bite forces and pressures, and can be shaded to blend with your smile. The finished bridge will contain the new teeth, known as pontics, with crowns on one or both ends of the prosthetic.
Securing Your Brand-New Teeth
When you return for a second visit, our team will attach the crown portions to the abutment teeth with a powerful bonding agent, securing them firmly in place. You now have new teeth that can stay in place for 10 to 15 years on average. These are easy to maintain too, just brush and floss them alongside your natural teeth, and clean the portion between the top of the gums and the bottom of the prosthetic to remove trapped food and drink particles. These actions also keep your new teeth bright!
