leawood sedation

When you’re going to undergo a complex procedure, such as a tooth extraction or dental implant placement, or if you feel nervous about treatment, we can help. With sedation dentistry, your Leawood, KS, dentist can offer treatments that calm people and help them enter a relaxed state. After all, we don’t want anxiety to stand between you and the beautiful smile you deserve!

When You May Need a Calming Option

Our team may recommend one for people with a fear of the dentist or high anxiety levels, as this could make it difficult to undergo even minor treatments. We also use this option to assist children and patients with special needs. Our team will take a number of different factors into account when we prescribe an option, such as age, weight, medical history, and anxiety levels. We will have a trained anesthesiologist on hand to monitor you or your family member too!

Nitrous Oxide

One of the more common options provided, this is helpful for kids and adults alike. Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is administered through a mask over the nose. The patient enters a calm and relaxed state, with little to no memory of the procedure afterward. They will be conscious however, and able to respond to the dentist as needed. The effects wear off quickly, so many people can drive themselves home or even return to work or school!

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is a deeper form of calming and is offered in a pill or liquid before the procedure. You will need to avoid food and drink for a few hours prior to treatment, and the effects are much deeper. You will again be conscious and able to respond, but will likely have no memory of the procedure. The effects take time to wear off, so have a friend or family member available to bring you home afterward.

IV

The deepest form available is given in intravenous form. You will have no memory of the procedure, and a trained anesthesiologist will be there to monitor you throughout the process. Again, you will need to have someone available to bring you home afterward, as you won’t be able to drive or return to work or school. If you have any questions about our sedation options, or if you would like to schedule your next checkup and cleaning visit, then contact our team today to learn more.
