Gentle Sedation with Nitrous Oxide

While dental sedation comes in a variety of forms, nitrous oxide sedation is the most commonly recommended. Often referred to as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is an inhaled sedative that we can administer with the help of a comfortable mask. The mask is worn over your nose, allowing you to exhale through your mouth immediately. While nitrous oxide is the mildest form of dental sedation, it’s also potent enough to help alleviate many different levels of anxiety and help most patients remain comfortable for longer during their visit.

How does nitrous oxide sedation work?

Nitrous oxide is designed to be safe for most patients, which is why it’s milder than other forms of sedation. The fact that you exhale the sedative immediately after inhaling it means that the effects won’t last long after you remove the mask, so you can drive yourself home safely after your procedure. However, if you experience heightened levels of dental anxiety or fear, or require an extensive restorative procedure, then we may suggest oral sedation for its stronger effects.
